My Tips for a Smooth and Productive Trip
Just got back from an action-packed work trip to Barcelona, Spain. It was a whirlwind—16 hours of travel, followed by two full days of meetings and networking with other teams. It was intense, but I’ve learned a few tricks along the way that help make these kinds of trips smoother, more efficient, and less stressful.
Here’s a collection of my top tips and strategies for mastering work travel—whether you're facing a short trip across the country or a long-haul international journey.
Tip 1: Avoid Checking Bags
This might seem like a small detail, but packing light and opting for a carry-on makes all the difference. Here's why:
Speed: No waiting around at baggage claim when you land. You’ll be out of the airport and on your way to your meetings or hotel that much faster.
Security: You don’t have to worry about lost or delayed luggage. With everything you need in your carry-on, you're in control.
Simplicity: Packing only what you need keeps your focus on the important stuff—your meetings, not your luggage.
Tip 2: Do Everything to Fight Jetlag
Jetlag can be brutal, especially on long international flights with significant time zone changes. Here are some ways I’ve found to beat it:
Schedule your flight wisely: If possible, book your flight so that you’re traveling overnight, arriving at your destination the night before your meetings begin. This way, you can sleep when you land and avoid feeling exhausted during the work day.
Adjust your sleep schedule in advance: A few days before your trip, try shifting your sleep schedule by an hour or two to align with your destination’s time zone. It can make your transition smoother once you land.
Bring sleep aids: If you know you’ll struggle to sleep on the plane or once you arrive, pack sleep aids like melatonin or Tylenol PM to help you adjust more easily.
Get an early check-in or extra night at the hotel: If you can't arrive the night before your meetings, see if your hotel can accommodate an early check-in, or book the previous night so you have somewhere to freshen up before the first day of meetings.
Tip 3: Keep Your Work/Travel Bag Organized
Organization is key when you’re traveling for work. Keeping your bag well-organized ensures that you can get work done on the go and move quickly through airports. Here’s what I recommend:
Tech essentials: Keep your laptop, chargers, power bank, and any work materials in an easily accessible part of your bag. This way, you can work during downtime, whether it’s on the plane or in a hotel lobby.
Important documents: Always keep your passport, tickets, and other important documents in a specific, easy-to-reach pocket. This makes it easier to move quickly through security and customs without fumbling around in your bag.
Snacks and water: Pack a few snacks and a reusable water bottle in your carry-on to keep your energy up. Healthy snacks (think protein bars or nuts) can keep you fueled through long meetings or flights.
Being organized isn’t just about packing—it’s about keeping everything you need within easy reach.
